The Construction Engineering Services Housing and Common Amenities Ministry allocated funds to develop urban habitats with low facilities in the Colombo City under the Janasevana Swashakthi programme. Rs 32 million was allocated this year to enhance facilities of urban habitats with low facilities in Colombo city under the guidance of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa, ministry sources said. The ministry allocated Rs 50 million for 2013 and Rs 38 million for 2014, the sources said. The sources said families face difficulties as most habitats have not been repaired for over 20 years. The minister directed National Housing Development Authority officials to take immediate steps to solve this problem.
The Authority has taken measures to develop these habitats in line with programmes to commemorate World Habitat Day which falls on October 1,” the sources said. Under this programme sanitary facilities, drainage systems of 21 habitats in Colombo North, Central Colombo, Colombo East and West have been developed.The Swashakthi programme is conducted in 200 habitats.
